RSHE and PHSE
At St John Fisher Catholic Primary School, we are a happy and inclusive Christian community where every child is valued as a unique individual, made in the image and likeness of God. We celebrate diversity and foster an environment where children are encouraged to grow in confidence, resilience, and faith. We are committed to excellence in all aspects of school life and strive to ensure that every child is nurtured and supported to reach their full potential.
Our school vision and Catholic ethos are at the heart of our Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) curriculum, which is delivered through a whole-school approach using the Jigsaw programme. This structured and progressive scheme supports the emotional, social, and mental wellbeing of all pupils, helping them to build self-esteem, confidence, and strong relationships.
As part of our broad and balanced PSHE curriculum, we also promote children's spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development, along with the fundamental British values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of others. Through this, we empower our pupils to become healthy, independent, and responsible members of society.
Weekly PSHE lessons are delivered using the Jigsaw scheme and are supported by our RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) programme, ‘A Journey in Love’. Together, these approaches ensure that children receive a rich and age-appropriate education that reflects our Catholic values and supports their personal development
RHSE Journey in Love Programme.
At St John Fisher Catholic Primary School we use the ‘Journey in Love’ RSHE programme, recommended by Liverpool Archdiocese and the Catholic Bishops of England and Wales. This programme is authentic to the Catholic faith and supports the teaching and learning of our pupils from EYFS to Year 6.
Through RSHE we aim to:
·To encourage pupils’ growth in self-respect, acknowledging we are all created in the image and likeness of God.
·To help pupils develop an understanding that love is the central basis of relationships.
·To help pupils to understand the nature of relationships and to encourage them to reflect on their own relationships and respect differences between people.
·To develop pupils’ confidence in talking, listening and thinking about feelings and relationships.
·To help pupils acquire the skills necessary to develop and sustain relationships
·To offer sex education in the wider context of relationships.
·To ensure that pupils protect themselves and ask for help and support when needed.
·To ensure that pupils are prepared for puberty.
·To help pupils to develop a healthier, safer lifestyle.
·To prepare pupils to play an active role as citizens and to understand the Catholic vision of what it means to be citizens of the Kingdom/reign of God.
