Subject Leader - Mrs A Roberts
As Music Subject Leader, I am passionate about ensuring that every child experiences the enjoyment and benefits of music. I believe music brings our school community together, develops confidence and creativity, and enables children to express their thoughts, feelings and faith.
I am committed to supporting staff in delivering the Sparkyard Music Curriculum and ensuring that pupils’ musical knowledge and skills develop progressively across the school. I value the important role that singing and hymns play within our Catholic community, particularly during prayer and liturgy, Masses, assemblies and celebrations.
My aim is to provide every child with meaningful opportunities to sing, play instruments, compose and perform. Through lessons, concerts, productions and whole-school celebrations, I want all pupils to feel included, successful and proud of their musical achievements while developing a lifelong love of music.
Music at St John Fisher
Singing is at the heart of our music curriculum and our Catholic school community. Children learn a wide range of songs and hymns, which are used during prayer and liturgy, Masses, assemblies and special celebrations throughout the liturgical year. Singing together enables pupils to participate fully in the prayer life of the school and strengthens our shared sense of faith and community.
At our school, we use the Sparkyard Music Curriculum to provide an engaging, inclusive and progressive musical education for every child. We aim to inspire a lifelong love of music while developing pupils’ confidence, creativity and ability to express themselves.
Through carefully sequenced lessons, children develop their skills in listening and responding, singing, playing instruments, improvising, composing and performing. Musical knowledge and vocabulary are introduced progressively, enabling pupils to understand and use concepts such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture, structure and notation.
Children are given regular opportunities to perform individually, in groups and as a whole school. These include class performances, assemblies, Masses, concerts, Christmas productions and other school celebrations. Performing develops cooperation, resilience, self-confidence and a sense of achievement.
Our music curriculum is accessible to all pupils, including those with SEND. Lessons and performances are adapted so that every child can participate successfully and recognise themselves as a musician.
Through Sparkyard, hymns and wider performance opportunities, we want pupils to leave primary school with secure musical knowledge, practical skills, confidence and joyful memories of making music together.
CHRISTMAS CONCERT
After school, on Friday 16th December, parents, carers and staff enjoyed festive performances from our school choir, recorder group and music ensemble. This included many beautiful Christmas songs presented by our choir and confident musical performances from our flute and clarinet players and trumpet duo. Dylan and Kelsey were really impressive singing solo accompanied by our musicians.

INSTRUMENTAL PLAY DAY - The Foundry Church
Some of our year 6 instrumental group took part in an exciting afternoon and evening at the Foundry Church, Widnes with lots of other children of all ages. They worked in small groups to learn four compositions ready for an evening performance on the same day.
Below are some of their comments:
"Yesterday, when I went to the Foundry, I was so excited because I had never been before. I was a little nervous because I had to sit by myself since I am the only flute player from St. John Fisher. When we started practising I was really struggling, but after the practise session and help from the adults that were there, I got the hang of it. Me, Alex, Kelsey, Molly and Izzy all had a great time! I kind of made a new friend - although I don't remember his name - but he was really nice! I definitely want to do this again and would recommend it to everyone else!" KATIE
"I was proud to represent our school in a band of 107 children. It was fun to meet new friends and talk to new people who love music as much as I do. I had lots of fun playing new music and reading the notes." MOLLY
"Yesterday, 29th November, including me, five girls went to the Foundry and represented St. John Fisher by performing with our instruments. It was an amazing event because we were able to show our talents and perform the best we could! Me and Molly - my best frined - met a new friend called, Emily, she is a lovely girl who helped us with our notes." IZZY
"Yesterday, I went to the foundry and had so much FUN! I made a new friend called Jess, who goes to St. Chads in Runcorn. We played 4 pieces and my favourite was ROCK IT! We got to perform with lots of different students from different Primary Schools. I had a great time!" ALEX
SPRING CONCERT - Sts. Peter and Paul College
The Choir took part in Sts Peter and Paul's Spring Concert. They enjoyed singing lots of Disney songs and were thrilled to be part of an exciting event working with children from other local Primary Schools and the older children who are pupils at Sts. Peter and Paul.
